What's In a Name
Steko-Tekoa: Yeah, I know, it’s an odd name but there is a reason behind it. Its actually two words. The first word Steko is Greek in origin, and it means to stand. But it’s more than that, it means to stand firm. Its often used in the Bible when exhorting one to endure or to not give up or to stand firm.
The second word is Tekoa. It’s the name of a location. It’s nine miles outside of Jerusalem, three miles beyond Bethlehem. It’s mentioned in 1 Chron. 20:20-30. This is where Jehoshaphat met the people of Judah when they went out against the invaders from Ammon, Moab and Mount Sier (Edom). God had already promised him that their enemies would be taken care of. God would personally see to the matter.
When Jehoshaphat and the people went out Tekoa this was where he proved his faith by putting the worshippers in front of everyone else. They sang and worshipped God as they continued toward the meeting with their enemies. You can read it for yourself in 1 Chron. 20:20-30.
The thing is: you just don’t do that in a war. They would get slaughtered. But Jehoshaphat believed God would take of the problem just as He said He would. He proved that faith by doing something contrary to proper military strategy. At the first sound or notes of the music God acted on behalf of Israel.
